Roller Coasters & Heart Transplants

Once I received my heart transplant I didn't think I would be able to ride roller coasters. I've always believed the experience of ridin' a coaster in and of itself should be prescribed by therapist helping people through hard times. It certainly works for me. I was elated when doctors gave me the go ahead . . . Here is that moment with a few of the youth living in my neighborhood.

  1. Now that was crazy! I felt like I was on that ride with you all...whew! Is it illegal for someone to smile as much as you did in that video? Come to think of it, I don't think I've seen you without a smile ever! I'm so happy you are having a fun time and doing the things you want to do.

  2. My 4 yr old watched the clip over my shoulder and just said, "Why would that kid want to do that?!"

  3. Awesome video! You are braver than I am to take a video camera on the ride. I usually just white knuckle the seat and close my eyes.

I hope Owen can go on a rollercoaster one day. I'm sure his smile will be almost as big as yours!

  10. I love watching you live life to the fullest! I always think that if you can do that, maybe Ellie will be able to do that someday too. We have already been told that that is on the no list. Thanks for being such a great example to these heart kiddos.

  11. Wow great job Paul! I'm amazed you were able to film that without losing your camera. Sorry about your favorite hat though :(

I can't do rides like that even if I wanted to. Years ago maybe..... but it's my stomach that won't handle it these days.

  12. Paul,
I am reading your book "Before my heart stops." It is truly amazing seeing the words in print that I have thought and lived in my life.

You see, I was born in 1966. I was a "blue" baby also. The Dr's told my mom not to even give me a name because I would not live through the night.

I have Tricuspid Atresia, Dextracardio and Transposition of the Great Vessels. I had the "Fontan" surgery, a "Glenn" procedure and a "Fontan" revision. I have always known that a transplant was in the future. Well the future is drawing closer.

I am not listed yet, but have faith that when that time comes, God will watch over me as he has done my whole life.

Sorry to run on, I just wanted to thank you for your book, your thoughts and encouragement.

    Sincerely,
    Michelle

  13. Grant and I went on Wicked last fall when Lucas was in the hospital with what looked like not much of a future. It was one of the few times we were away from his bedside, but it's amazing what kind of therapy a roller coaster really can be! Thanks for sharing this wonderful experience with all of us!!

  14. It think it is amazing to be able to ride a roller coaster even after such a surgery and that shows how well we have improved in our medical aids.

colossus was my very first roller coaster that I ever rode. I use to live in Adrian Oregon. We traveled down to Lagoon with a church group. We camped out, went to the water park and had loads of fun. I have since then rode many roller coasters but I will always remember that one is the one that I conquered my fear for the 1st time.
